Spike Conical- observations and best practices

@RCope GE FUF14DLRWW Internal measurements above the crisper drawer are 21" W, 18" D, 41" H. It will require a ledge to be built where the crisper panel goes plus some sort of support under that ledge. That shouldn't be too difficult. There might even be enough room on the bottom once you...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

Yes, that is the plan. The freezer will be right next to my brewing setup so the CF5 will be in the freezer before I fill it. I do EBIAB so it's a stationary setup for the most part.

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

So I got my CF5 yesterday. Haven't had a chance to open and clean it yet. My plan was to use an upright freezer as a fermentation chamber, but after reading this thread and all the temp control talk, I'm wondering if it makes more sense to do some sort of chiller setup. I'll be fermenting in...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

@Beardless Had it custom made by Norcal Brewing. He's here on HBT. Goes by the username Jaybird. I use it with a short sanke keg fermenter now and luckily Spike's lids have a 4" TC cap so I can transition it over without needing to spend any additional cash. The thermowell extends about 9"...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

@Blazinlow86 Here's a picture of the top of the 4" TC lid I'll use. It has 2 ball lock posts, a thermowell and a 1.5" TC ferrule, all welded on. Ideally I be able to put a compression fitting on the end of a long corny diptube and hook up a carb stone to that. If I can't find the parts for...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

I have a 4" TC lid with 2 ball lock posts and a 1.5" TC ferrule welded on so I plan to use that to put a carb stone down into the beer. That will give me some extra clearance to fit it into the freezer.

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

I'm planning to buy the CF5. I'm about 99% certain I'll be using an upright freezer as a fermentation chamber. I'm planning on getting the blowoff cane and the PRV manifold bundle. Are there any other must-have accessories? I figure I'll use a light bulb for a heat source. Is the heat wrap...

    Water volume by weight

Sounds like a plan to me. I use weight for my processes since I ferment in a closed vessel.

    Homebrew MUST Haves

Anything that can shorten my brew day. A decent scale to measure hops A vacuum sealer to be able to store brew day hops by addition times, and to store opened bulk hops for later Plastic storage bins to keep by fittings organized by size A container to keep my salts and other dry additions in...

    Brewer's Best LME ppg question

Using the SG and the weight of the extract, I backed out the range of PPG to 35.8-36.6 ppg which seems in line.

    Brewer's Best LME ppg question

Oh, yeah, that makes sense. So you gotta take a weighted average of the volumes and SGs of the extract and water to get the SG of the mixture.

    Brewer's Best LME ppg question

I thought of SG, but if that's the case, there's a missing 0. If it was 1.0425-1.04397, that would make more sense. Plus, with extract, you'd think they would just list the actual PPG like 36 since efficiency is 100%.

    Brewer's Best LME ppg question

I picked up a a couple of cans of Brewer's Best LME to shorten my brew day and the PPG listed is confusing. It gives a range of 1.4250-1.4397. Anyone know how to decipher that? I saw a question asked on a retailer website about what ABV can be expected from this and they said for 3 cans (9.9...

Kettle size for 5 gallon BIAB

Yep, just get a 15 gallon kettle and save yourself the stress. No boilovers and it will handle as much grain as you want for a 5 gallon batch.

    Happy 4-20

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/420_(cannabis_culture) Can't say if this is the definitive origin of 420 but its definitely one of the most common ones I've heard. Now get out there and drink a Waldos from Lagunitas!

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

My last NEIPA batch, I transferred the beer off the yeast into a purged keg with hops and it had the best aroma maybe of any of my NEIPA batches. The downside to doing this is that you really can't do a full purge when you add hops to the receiving keg. What I did was do my full liquid purge...

Why is it so hard to find good commercially produced mead?

@NeverDie Superstition and Moonlight both ship to TX. I'd start there. Not cheap but they make good mead IMO.

Hornindal Kveik is blowing my mind

When you say 1 tsp of slurry, is that like shaking up the yeast pouch and just using 1 tsp of that? Or is that like making a starter, letting it settle, draining off the liquid and using 1 tsp of the dense yeast material?
