    Questions from weekend brew.

On Friday I did a 10 gallon batch in my keggle. I whirlpooled with no cover and watched what happened. The really fine floaties, which I am assuming are the cold break, stayed in suspension until the whirlpool had completely stopped, then started to settle out. If this is the case, you may...

    Better Bottle vs. WaterCooler bottle

I tried a plastic drinking water bottle a few months ago. After 2 weeks in the secondary, I could taste no off flavors in my house brew. I haven't needed to use it since, as I have 4 other 5 gallon glass carboys, but I would not hesitate to use it again, especially if I knew it would only be...

    Air tight Blow-off

I wrapped mine with electrical tape and soaked it in sanitizer for a few days. I no longer use a 1" hose. I got some of those orange plastic carboy caps with the two stubs on top. You can put a 3/8" ID hose over one of the stubs and use it as a standard blow off. It is MUCH smaller than the...

    Measuring S.G. while avoiding solids

+1 on the turkey baster. It is probably my most used tool. I keep one sanitized to draw samples, top off air locks and fill and flush hoses with sanitizer. I haven't touched my thief in over a year.

    How's this recipe fellas? (APA)

Looks good to me. It isn't too much different from my UPA house recipe. (It changes often, by the way.) I used to use the NB, Cascade combination, but I couldn't get NB in my last order to Hops Direct, so I am using a combination of Magnum, Cascade, and am experimenting with Amarillo. I keep...

Thoughts on newbie going straight to AG

+1! Luckily, I started with a 34 qt turkey fryer for my extract batches. After 3 brews I scored a 30 qt aluminum turkey fryer for $20 for a HLT and a cheap cooler and stepped up to all grain. While I no longer use the fryer pots and coolers, they got me through about 20 AG batches before I...

    50 quart Mash Tun

I use the Coleman Xtreme 70 quart for 10 gallon batches. There is a lot of room in there! IMHO, it is too big for 5 gallons. Remember, 70 quarts = 17.5 gallons. That's darn near twice the size of the 10 gallon coolers that a lot of people use.

    What did Santa bring?

What did you guys get for Christmas? Santa brought me: Family from far away to visit with 50# of Rahr 2 row Sanke keg false bottom 3" dial thermometer with 1/2" NPT connection Winexpert Pinot Noir kit Galena, Amarillo, and Hallertau Hops, 1#, 10 oz each from Hops Direct. I love the...

Best and/or Worst Brewing Gadgets You've Ever Purchased

The worst was a two wing wine bottle corker. I corked 5 bottles and returned it. The store wouldn't give me a refund, only in store credit. I exchanged it for my first beer kit, an American Amber. That first kit was my best investment.

    Orfy's Hob Goblin

I tapped a batch a month ago. I will definitely brew it again.

How often do you stir your mash?

I stir at mash in and every 15 minutes thereafter. I let it sit for about 5 minutes before draining the tun.

    Fly sparging question

Geez, I wasn't intending to start a debate. I have done 20+ batches using the batch sparge technique, except for the slow runnoff in my last 3 batches due to a finer crush I have been happy. I have a few reasons for moving to fly sparging. One is better efficiency. I do buy my grain in...

    Pumping water through Chiller

My march pump works good for me. I pump through 50' of 1/4" copper with no problem. As others have said, after the first 5 minutes or so, flow is less important than cooler surface area and temperature differential.

    Fly sparging question

Right now I am using a keggle to boil, an 8 1/2 gal turkey fryer pot for an HLT, and I have 34 and 70 qt coleman extreme coolers with manifolds for mashing. I batch sparge both 5 and 10 gallon batches. I have 2 more keggles converted for a HLT and MLT, and I am waiting on a false bottom. I...

10 gallon vs 5 gallon MLT - Bear with me!!

Do to good timing, I was able to buy a 34 qt and a 70 qt. Coleman Extreme cooler for the same price as a 10 gallon. They are about the perfect size for batch sparging 5 and 10 gallon batches. I am able to use the same manifold for both, but needed 2 bulkheads instead of 1. I am glad that I...

    Barley Crusher Baby!

Fantastic!!! I have been using a BC for about a year, and I was also getting eff's in the mid 70's. I tightened the screws 3 brews ago and got back to back batches in the mid 80's, but with sparging issues. Yesterday I backed off the rollers to the 1:00 position, and the crush looked good. I...

    New all Grain setup

You don't need to add a spigot to your HLT/boil kettle. I am currently using a 8 1/2 gallon pot for my HLT. I batch sparge in a cooler with a two tier system, MLT on top. I transfer the water from the HLT to the MLT with a 2 quart pitcher until there are about 2 gallons left, then lift up the...

    Fly sparging question

So, what you are saying is when I am done sparging I will not have 1" of water above the grain, the MLT will be drained of all of the liquid. Is this correct?

    Fly sparging question

This is probably a simple question, but I need to ask it anyway. I am planning on switching from batch to fly sparging, and have no fly sparging experience. My question is do you stop your hot water flow to the top of the MLT early so you can collect all of the wort from the MLT? If I want to...

    Arrogant Bastard brewing tomorrow (12-16)

+1!! I have been using Safale 05 and 04 for the past 9 months, and I have been very happy with them. Great products!
