Berliner Weisse Sour Cherry Berliner Weisse

Ah, the old broken hydrometer. I don't brew a ton but I'm on my third one. Approximately 1.009 is a point lower than what I got on a lower gravity beer with K-97, I'm trying US-05 next.

Berliner Weisse Sour Cherry Berliner Weisse

That sounds awesome! How did the US-05 attenuate? I’m thinking of doing another BV and can’t decide on yeast.

    Your "uh oh...." moments....

I might as well as mopped, my knees still hurt from cleaning it all up! That might work for kegging or bottling days, my wife hates the smell of wort so much I have to brew outside. It's fun reading these uh-oh moments, and I like how many times the beer turned out fine. It reminds me how...

    Is Beer Smith worth it?

Yep, pretty much. Both run specials from time to time. Brewers friend has a limited free version, and Beersmith desktop has a free trial. You can always try the trial version out and decide for yourself. Now you see why software companies like the cloud based subscription pricing models.

    Your "uh oh...." moments....

I have one from today. I was kegging a cider and somehow inadvertently pulled the siphon hose out of the keg and covered half the kitchen floor with hard cider before I realized what was happening. Good thing SWMBO wasn’t home.

    Is Beer Smith worth it?

If you are comfortable working with software in general, I say it’s worth it, it was for me. I like that you can save all the recipes you want. Brewers friend is great, but you can only save 5 recipes with the free version. I like that it was a one time license fee, rather than a subscription...

What are you brewing next & have on tap/bottled

I just legged a cider today, and have a Munich Helles on tap. What’s next? Either a pale ale (sorachi ace smash) or a leichtbier for a lighter option. Can’t decide.

    BIAB vs AG recipes

Get a wilserbrewer bag (http://biabbags.webs.com) with the pulley, double crush your grain, use beersmith or biabcalculator.com to calculate volumes and temps, and follow the water chemistry primer in the brewing science forum, and your good to go. I’ve done full volume mashes of 1.050 and below...

    OxyClean Free - Residue

I used to use oxiclean free for all my cleaning and it seemed like it took forever to rinse, I imagine if you have soft water it's even worse. I used PBW which rinsed great but cost a fortune, then I started using the homemade version found here -...

    Watermelon Gose

Cool, I was wondering if it was a simple as mashing up some watermelon then doing the freezing process. Good to know you didn’t have to use a juicer or blender or something. Thanks!

First Time Keg Order, how's the price?

Before you checkout, listen to the podcast they have a link to on their website, they offer a coupon code during the intro. Wish I’d listened to the podcast before my order... by the way, I’m super happy with my order, I got pinlocks also. They were cheaper and fit better in our extra fridge.

    Watermelon Gose

I'm curious - how did you make the fresh melon juice? The recipe looks fantastic, I'm not normally crazy about watermelon, but I had a watermelon gose in Tennessee a few months back and it was delicious.

German Pils Gavin's Glorious German Pilsner

I'll offer my opinion here. It depends on your water, you may be fine if you have very soft water. If you can get your hands on a water report or ask fellow brewers in your area if they've done one that will help. The other option is to do some basic water treatments without getting into the...

Is my yeast starter messed up?

It’s probably done. Does it have any funky smells? I had a 2L wyeast 2124 starter finish about that fast once.

    Czech Pale Lager Vienna Saazage

After reading Brulosophy's exbeeriment about using all Vienna or all Munich in a lager, and in my quest to make a lower calorie beer with craft beer flavor, I decided to do a Vienna Saaz SMASH. My family all tease me about how many Vienna Sausages I ate as a small child, though I find them...

Got free bottles to give away? Post 'em here!

I've got a couple 1-gallon empty cider jugs if anyone wants them. I'll throw in some delabeled 12 oz bottles if you come and get them. Meyerland area in Houston, TX.

Carb issues due to bottle size?

Then it's not time, temp, priming sugar amount, and probably not bottles/caps. You didn't age it for a long time, and I take it nothing unusual with bottle washing/sanitizing? Outside of those, I'm not sure what else it could be. My flat bottles have all been leaky grolsch gaskets that I...

Carb issues due to bottle size?

It could be a few things. Since the caps hiss, I would assume your your capper works fine and the caps aren't leaking. I've had EZ cap bottles get flat from leaking gaskets. I've also seen larger bottles take longer to carb, but eventually they will if everything else is ok. What temperature...

How long to use rubber seal on swingtop bottles

Check the gasket every time you empty it. If there is a permanent indentation from the bottle after leaving open for a while, it will probably leak next time you use it. I’ve used the pink rubber replacements and they don’t last more than a few brews. If they’re the softer silicone material they...
