    Hydrometer and refractometer errors

I will give this a try.

    Hydrometer and refractometer errors

Perhaps. Although I am not encouraged by this sentence from the MoreBeer web page for a "Final Gravity Hydrometer": "It is common for the economical hydrometers made for the brewing or winemaking hobbyist to be off up 3 points." Mine is more than that, but not by much. I tried knocking the...

    Hydrometer and refractometer errors

The hydrometer reads 1.004 in DI water at 60F (the calibration temp for the hydrometer). I knew it was off, but I thought it would be linear. Maybe my measurements of the "known" solutions are what is causing the non-linear error for the hydrometer. My scale reads to 0.1g, and I was careful...

    Measuring SG with a scale

Thanks. I'm still not sure how to read the hydrometer. I thought you were supposed to look at the bottom of the meniscus to get the reading. Based on your preboil picture, I would read 1.042, and 1.012 for the FG. So maybe I'm reading it wrong, or maybe the pictures don't give a good...

    Hydrometer and refractometer errors

So I brewed my first batch yesterday, and took measurements of my gravities at various times throughout the process. I used a hydrometer and a refractometer (an ATC model with specific gravity markings directly on the readout). I noticed that the readings were very different between the two...

    Measuring SG with a scale

Just out of curiosity, what gravity values did you get for these two pictures? I'm still having trouble deciding where to read it.

DIY float ball for sparge water?

Thanks. I guess I'll have to get a relay.

DIY float ball for sparge water?

Yeah, I have 2 chugger pumps. I was hoping you had found a switch that would work for AC. I found this one (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00909404Y/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20) but I don't know what 30 VA means...

DIY float ball for sparge water?

I'd like to add a switch for my pump. Where did you get this one?

    Yeast storage question

Thanks. I appreciate your answers. You say that you shoot for 5-8 conicals--is the variability based on the age of the original yeast tube, or do you do some kind of cell count after incubation?

    Yeast storage question

So after you decant, approximately how much volume are you adding to each conical?

    Yeast storage question

Thanks for your reply. Yes, this is my other favorite alternative. This one is quicker from freezer to pitching, but it does require a starter from the original, and I was worried that it might become contaminated, and thus all of my stocks would be bad... I hadn't seen any mention of going...

    Yeast storage question

I am getting ready to start using liquid yeast, and I have been doing a lot of reading about starters and yeast storage methods. I am a bacteriologist by training, but I am discovering that yeasts grow quite differently than bacteria… I’d appreciate it if folks would comment on what I am...

Using extra wort as a starter in the future - a couple of questions

Thanks, that makes sense. Your method sounds like one I'll try. What does "no-chill" mean, though?

Using extra wort as a starter in the future - a couple of questions

What about boiling the DME in a big kettle, then let it sit (or cold crash) to let the trub settle out. Then decant into mason jars and pressure can.

    Where to fuse?

So it seems I should put a fuse in the 18 gauge wire. Does this seem right?
  18. dunbruha

    Where to fuse?

But I already have a 20A circuit breaker for the entire circuit. My question is do I need an additional fuse somewhere else.

    Where to fuse?

Do you mean between the SSR and the outlet for the element? How big of a fuse?
