how to properly take hydro readings

I saw a video where the guy took out the sample for the OG and then poured the sample into a bottle. He then continued to use that same sample throughout the fermentation process for the readings. Since the sample had yeast, the assumption was it would ferment at the same rate as the primary...

    Question on FG...

Up until today, my fermentation temperature was around 63. I moved to a warmer spot today and increased it to about 66. The kit came with 4 lbs of hopped dark extract syrup. I added another 4.3 lbs so that was in addition to the extract from the kit. My original plan was to rack to...

    Question on FG...

I brewed my first batch six days ago. I didn't take my OG but I calculated it to be .059. I took a reading yesterday and I was at .022. The target FG from Beer Calculus is .016. My question is, how much of a difference is there from .022 to .016? Since this is my first brew, I used a...

Has anyone ever messed up a batch??

Revvy - this has been extremely helpful to me. I definitely makes me feel much more at ease. I've learned that: no matter how bad you messed things up, there is still a good chance the beer will end up just fine If things look bad, give it some time and most of all, just relax and have...

Has anyone ever messed up a batch??

Granted, I am new to this forum but have spent quite a bit of time the past few weeks reading many, many threads. It always appears that when someone has major problems (at least to me) with a batch, someone (who knows much more than I) replies with... "And your beer is fine. Don't worry."...

Airlock seal fell into the bucket, what to do

Thanks for the advice, makes me feel a little better. How much pressure if any builds up in the bucket during fermentation? I was worried that the airlock could pop off if there is any amount of pressure. BTW - just checked and there is bubble action in the airlock so things appear great for now.

No Hydrometer Measure p is it a big deal

Yes, this is a extract-only. Tried to keep it as simple as possible..

No Hydrometer Measure p is it a big deal

Did my first batch and everything went good until my airlock seal fell into brew (another thread). In all the excitement, I forgot to do an initial gravity check. Is this a big deal or should I try to get one now? It been about 12 hours since I put the yeast in. I am concerned that I risk...

Airlock seal fell into the bucket, what to do

I brewed my first batch last night. When I put the airlock in, the seal fell into the batch. I was not able to find it. Since I didn't have another lid or seal, I simply pushed the airlock in firmly without a seal. My question is will this be OK. Does it have to be sealed tight for the...

    another noob moment, airlock seal....

OK, guess I am a new member of this club. Just did my first batch and the same thing happened. I've learned my lesson. I didn't have another rubber stopper or lid so i put the airlock in as best I could. Hope it works out. I wasn't going to use a second fermenter but I may now since I can...

Just received my equipment kit and have two options for my first batch. Now, I just need to find a couple of free hours to brew. This appears to be a great forum.

    Ferment in upper 40's

Bought a kit but have not received it yet. I'd like to ferment in my basement but right now the temperature is around 48 degree F. Is there any beer that will ferment in this colder environment?
