Thanks Folks!
Ever hear the quote "you're never too old to learn?" Well.... I am 71 and this beer brewing deal is an excellent example of that old axiom.
Thanks all.....
Hi Folks....
I am fermenting a batch of Mr. Beer Amber Ale - published ABV = 5.9% with an IBU of 30
After 1 month in the fermenter (at 72 degrees) the ABV I am calculating is only about 3.6% AND it hasn't changed in a week:
OG 1.044; FG 1.017 ........ (OG - FG) * 133 = 3.6% AND it...
I get the biggest kick out of your "handle". My wife is from Escanaba, MI so the U.P. is always being discussed - especially the winter weather.
By the way.... I'm sure you've heard of the singing group from the UP... The Yoopers? Funny for sure
I am fermenting a batch of Mr. Beer Amber Ale - published ABV of 5.9%
I measured the OG before adding the yeast = 1.044
Now (17 days fermenting) = 1.023
1.044 - 1.023 = 0.021 * 100 = 2.1%
Is this the correct way to determine ABV?
If so... does 2.1% after 17 days sound right?
As...
Thanks to all.... I'm going to pack a half dozen bottles. I'm thinking I will put a couple bottles in FoodSaver vacuum bags - just in case.

Hi folks...
Wondering if any of you have packed home brew (plastic 750ml bottles) in checked airline baggage. I checked with Alaska Airlines and they allow up to 5 liters in checked baggage.
Has anyone done it and if so, how did you pack the bottles?
Yeah, I know... a stupid question...
Thanks again folks.........
BOTTLED!....NOW

Reminds me of "the countdown to Christmas morning" ... 21 days in storage; then 7 days or so in the fridge; then

First brewing attempt (as I've said in my previous post) - I have been fermenting for 13 days and the specific gravity readings have remained constant at about 1.01.
Does a steady SG indicate that the brew is fermented enough for bottling?
I did google that question and couldn't find the...
Grreat! Thanks for that video - points out a number of ERRORS I made. Well... I guess that's what a first attempt is for.
Appreciate the info

OK... new to brewing. Have a Mr. Beer IPA in the fermenter for 13 days now and have been checking the ABV with the hydrometer (that's what it's for - right?
I checked ABV after 7 days, 10 days and today (13 days in the fermenter). The hydrometer remains steady at 1.01 * 100% = 1% ONE...
Obviously I am new to home brewing. First batch fermenting - Mr. Beer IPA. I have a couple of really basic questions regarding the water:
1. What TYPE of water should I be using (i.e. tap; spring; distilled; etc?
2. Does the type of water make a difference?
3. Mr. Beer instructions calls...
