I just ordered some 22 oz bottles from a brew store and was wondering if i should take the time to give them a good cleaning or trust that they are clean and just sanitize them? They look relatively clean but my eyes have fooled me before.
I just started usin this stuff and besides all the bubbles, is it supposed to leave a "sanitized" scent in the carboys...will this odor impart off flavors? do you rinse the carboys out following the star san?? Im still not set on this whoel Cleaning/sanitizing stuff so tell me what you do...thanks!!
I cleaned out my 6.5 gal better bottle w/ a bent wire brush and noticed that around the neck there were numerous scracthes...is this gonna be a problem?
thanks

my first try at a lager has been unsucessfull; i tried an oktoberfest using superior lager yeast (dry) from midwest supplies. I pitched the yeast below 80 degrees and then put the carboy in my fridge and set the temp on 45...its been 3 days now and....NOTHING. before i pitched the yeast, i put...
9.3 pounds of Amber malt extract, 1 pound of specialty grains, 3 ounces of hops
I filled my test jar as i was siphoning the wort from the kettle into the primary...so obviously w/out the other 3.5 gallons of water to dilute it it was very high....stupid error. thanks for the help. I took...
Is it okay to have my lager ferment for 4-5 days, give it a diacetyl rest, and then throw it in the secondary for the remainder of the time...or should i really let it go the full 7-10 days of primary fermentation before i give it a diacetyl rest?? thanks

Do you put water or sanitizer in these like the 3-piece airlocks? Or do you just put them on and let them sit? Rapid answer needed!! THanks in advance

How do you guys transfer your wort into your fermenter? I use a strainer but it takes forever because all the hop and grain bits always clog it up so i have to keep stirring it and it takes forever. Is there a faster method of doing this? thanks

Heres the deal...My IPA has been in bottles for 2 weeks now and the flavor is getting worse. I definitely notice a cidery smell which based on my limited knowledge, and my situation, is probably due to too much sugar or to short of fermentation time (along w/ others such as bacterial or wild...
I just opened a bottle of my first ever beer. I made an IPA and it has been in bottles for a week now. I plan on letting it sit for at least 3 weeks, but I couldnt wait to taste it and see how it was coming. The actual beer looks and tastes good, but there is kind of a bitter aftertaste? MY...
I just bottled my first pale ale and was wondering at what temperature should i let it sit in the bottles? I was thinking of letting it sit around 55 F...is this to cold or can i lower the temp? Thanks.

heres my process:
1) Boiled the malt extract and 3 cups of sugar
2) added 3 gallons of water to a 6.5 carboy for my primary fermenter
3) suctioned out a small amount of wort to wet the yeast and filled a tube w/ wort to test the OG (which came out to be 1.083 - obviously somethin not right...
