    SRM mystery

Here's a picture. I'm holding this in front of my stove light.

    SRM mystery

The SRM of 2 comes from brewtoad.com, which actually just folded, so I can't point you to the recipe on their site. I've had some issues with their site before, so it's possible their SRM calculator was wonky. Anyway, I think I've got this one figured out, after going over my notes and...

    SRM mystery

High mash pH probably isn't the culprit, since I keep a close eye on the gravity during the sparge, and it never got below 1.020. Overboiling is definitely a possibility. I'm starting the boil with 6.5 gallons in the pot, and ending with 5.5, which is a 16% boil off . . . and that's too high...

    SRM mystery

Not sure what you mean by direct-fired. Mash was 154 deg F for one hour, fly sparge at 170 deg F. 60 minute boil. Fermentation at 68 deg F, in primary for 2 weeks, dry hop for another two weeks. Bottle condition for three weeks at 68 deg F.

    SRM mystery

I've been working on a single-hop citra IPA recipe, and something really strange happened with my latest iteration. I'm aiming for a lovely pale straw color, and my brewing software said that the SRM for this last batch should be 2. Somehow, it has come out much, much darker; between 8 and 9. My...

Appropriate amount of time for pellicle formation?

It's only been in the secondary for three months, so it's early for tasting yet. I'm glad to know that some of yours never formed a pellicle; I always figured that the pellicle was a necessary side-effect of the souring process.

Appropriate amount of time for pellicle formation?

I started a Flanders red back in December (2017). After primary fermentation was done, I racked it to a bucket and added my additional yeast and bugs (Wyeast 3763 Roeselare Belgian sour blend). As of this week, there's what looks like the beginning of a pellicle; an oily sheen with some...

    Mysterious black stuff in fermenter!

    Nope, this was Safale US-05.

    Mysterious black stuff in fermenter!

Thanks everyone. I've gone ahead and bottled it. My fermenter is about to get the s**t cleaned out of it.

    Mysterious black stuff in fermenter!

Tastes fine, really. The SG has been stable for a while (this beer has been dry hopped).

    Mysterious black stuff in fermenter!

Hey everyone, I just hauled my fermenter out of the closet for bottling day, and there's something I've never seen before. Check out the black stuff in picture. It doesn't seem to be getting down into the beer, but I don't know what it is. Has anyone seen anything like this? Is it mold? Is it a...

    Loosen stuck fittings?

Is that right? Good to know. I will definitely replace this with a stainless steel coupler. Thanks!

    Loosen stuck fittings?

Thanks! More WD40 (a LOT more) and patience was the key. I sprayed it again (and again and again) and left it overnight. Tried again this morning, and it the fittings separated with a little elbow grease.

Will my freakishly clear beer carbonate?

Reviving this old post for a moment: the beer carbonated just fine. I did my usual 4 oz corn sugar in boiled in 2 cups water, added to the bottling bucket before racking the beer into it, let the bottles condition for three weeks. All good!

    Loosen stuck fittings?

I need to get the bottom one out of the top one. WD-40 hasn't worked so far. Any suggestions?
