    Fermentation in secondary fermenter

It definitely wasn't done fermenting in the primary before you transferred it in the secondary.

Floating trub = Krausen that didn't fall?

Don't know what to tell you on the cake not falling. I have brewed about 10 extract batches and the krausen has always fallen. It took a couple weeks and i fermented around 60f.

    Brewing Lagers in North Dakota

I will be fermenting both beers in the fridge with the heater. I would of had both of them fermenting at the same time but my starter that i had made for the czech pils broke all over the floor and i had to order more yeast. :tank:

The Heater is working great. Its been keeping it at a perfect 52f. The American Lager has been fermenting away for a week now. Gonna start my Czech pilsner on Thursday. Got the starter going tonight.

I will have the ultimate test this weekend when its suppose to get -35F. I would rather have your problem schia. Just get a fermenting fridge and a temp controller and your all set. :mug:

    Brewing Lagers in North Dakota

I tried a small heater from work that they let me use. Had a few extra on hand. We use them to heat telco cabinets in the winter. Its a small metal heater that has no problem keeping the heat at 50 to 55 in my fridge. It however is an expensive unit costing around 300.00. I told them i didnt...

    Brewing Lagers in North Dakota

I just got done moving in my new apartment and will try the heater solution hopefully in a couple weeks. Gonna try a couple Lager recipes. I am going to brew my Java Stout in the next few days first. I have a storage space that stays around 60 so the Stout will ferment there. I will let you...

I just dont think the pad will keep it warm enough in the fridge when the temp dips -20 below zero. I am gonna try a small heater and see if that will help. Thanks for the info though...:mug:

Thanks Jawbox, I was toying with the idea of some kind of small heater. I cant put the fridge inside since i will be in an apartment.

I do have a Johnson temp controller. I would use the heat setting on it so the compressor will not be running. Would a brew belt keep it warm enough at the proper fermenting temp?

    Brewing Lagers in North Dakota

I am planning on brewing some lagers in a fridge that i have and i will be storing it in an uninsulated garage. The outside temp can get -40 at times and was wondering what would work to keep the fridge in the 50's for fermenting lagers.

    Secondary fermentation question

You dont add yeast to the secondary. When you secondary its for conditioning purposes only. The fermentation takes place in the primary. Just make sure its done fermenting before transferring to the secondary. If i was you i would leave it in the primary for 3 to 4 weeks and siphon to bottling...
