Transitioning from Irish Stout to Milk Stout

I defer to others with recipe building abilities/experience. With that said, her is a 2 Bean Milk Stout I recently brewed. This started as a Lancaster Milk stout recipe on Beer Smith. I added 4 cups of cold brew coffee (easy to do in my French Press) and 2 vanilla beans sliced then soaked in...

Help me choose 240v brewery controller - No DIY

After testing, auto tuning and brewing three beers I really like the Stir-Plate unit.

    Solid vs Mesh sided Biabasket

Appreciate the details. I do the same, hopefully will see the same result as you did.

    Solid vs Mesh sided Biabasket

Thanks for sharing a picture of what looks like a great glass of beer. Did you do anything to improve clarity after fermentation or just transfer?

    Solid vs Mesh sided Biabasket

Some of my findings since my original post to this thread. Yes the 400 micron screen is very fine, so much so that it can trap air. The first two batches I stirred for 10-15 as others have posted. These were both Stouts with 11 lbs. grain bill. Efficiency was 74.2%. During this time you can...

    Solid vs Mesh sided Biabasket

I recently started using a solid side, 400 mic. floor basket from Arbor. I've found that you need to be patient with getting the grain bed settled correctly. It takes a bit of extra time however once it settles you are good to go. My system will hold 14 gal. total. Arbor did a great job with...

    Fav fermentation vessel?

I recently added a 6.5 gal. Minibrew plastic conical to my fermentor line up. Stainless fittings, blocks light, holds temperature like it is insulated. Love it. Maybe a second one will show up soon...

    Pic Request: BIAB recirc/vorlauf

I'm using the typical 400 micron floor in a solid side basket. Wort is about as clear as it gets. Recent brews have been dark beers so wort picture wouldn't be helpful.

What is everyone getting for grain absorption?

My most recent brew was - 8.81 gal. water, 11 lbs. grain bill with .81 grain absorption. It was really close according to my sight glass. I do use a press plate.

    Fresh Start

I was inspired by my brother-in-law who has been home brewing for 15 years. To drink quality fresh bear on tap at home hooked me for sure. Recently I built two keezers (CO2, Nitro), temp. controlled fermentor and a brew rig. After inspiration from "The Ultimate Electric Brewery" on YouTube my...

    Use of stir plates

I use a bendable straw, shorten the shortest end, bend at 90 degrees then set on rim and rap with foil. Straw and foil get sprayed generously with StarSan prior to use. You will notice far less condensation versus a foam stopper. Not sure where to find a larger foam stopper. The one I...

    Use of stir plates

I prefer foil with a straw over using a foam cork or foil alone. Your starter will benefit from oxygen. Part of the process is to avoid contaminating your yeast, foil and foam corks allow this to happen. IMHO the addition of a straw works even better. The bacteria and wild yeast we are...

    Electric BIAB

Be sure to put your plan down on paper first. If you have the ability to use 240V you will not regret it. If you intend to brew 5 gallon batches a 15 gallon kettle works fantastic, even for the biggest bears you can dream up. I use a Stir-Plate 240V RIMS controller for my EBIABasket system...

Kegerator tower cooling - advice wanted

Sounds like you are headed in the right direction by insulating the lid. I found once my keezer was moved into the basement (lower temp) my tower does stop sweating after 30 minutes. :mug:
