Need help/answer on High FG Reading

I did a liter and a half starter of US-05 and the web site I read said to pitch it the next day when active and high krausen. It had gone about 32 hours and was looking good. It did say not to oxygenate the wort, so I didn't. It did nothing to the gravity reading.

Need help/answer on High FG Reading

Update on my FG problem. 1. My mash thermometer is calibrated, and I also use 2 in my system along with a check with a thermal pen. 2. Looking back, I wonder if my yeast was old??? I did make a starter but may not have updated the packages date in the program for the correct viability. I used...

Need help/answer on High FG Reading

I decided to open up the fermenter and check. Looks like 1.024. Cleaned off the Tilt sanitize and put it back in and it's reading 1.026.

I only mash at that temp when I do Stouts but haven't had them stall before.

Forgot to mention I did that when I pitched the second yeast starter. Thanks though.

Need help/answer on High FG Reading

Not yet. I got 2 of the Tilt's for Christmas but I know what you are saying about the Krausen on them. I did clean it when I pitched the second yeast starter. In Yooper's recipe, she left it the fermenter for 3 weeks. I'm going to do that and then verify the reading. Can't do much now. Thanks!!

Need help/answer on High FG Reading

I've been brewing all grain BIAB since 2016 and this is a first for me. I've have brewed many styles over the years and always have had great success hitting my numbers and brewing great beers. This is a first for me, so I'm lost on why it happened and asking for your help. I've brewed a few...

    Cold Crashing and Mylar Balloons

Sounds good, now that I know about the seal. Do you reuse the balloons? Wasn't sure about sanitizing them after being used.

    Cold Crashing and Mylar Balloons

I have been cold crashing many of my beers for the last couple of years. I have read and tried many tips about helping with dealing with the vacuum that occurs when the fermenter is chilled. I have used cotton balls with Star Stan and Vodka in the airlocks for the most part. The other day I...

Soaking Oak Chips in Bourbon for Secondary

I have done 2 batches of a Dragon's Milk clone and a Backwoods Bastard clone and used oak and bourbon. All three I soaked 2 oz. of medium toast oak chips with 8 oz. of bourbon. I placed the oak in a hop sack and placed it into a ball jar of bourbon for about 3 to 4 weeks. I then added the chips...

Input Wanted On Founders Backwoods Bastard Clone Recipe

I brewed this on 1/19/2020. I followed the recipe that I posted and only changed the amounts for a 5.5 gallon batch. My water profile was pretty close. I feel it came out pretty close to the original. It's been over 6 months and I sample a small glass every month. I find it changes slightly for...

Input Wanted On Founders Backwoods Bastard Clone Recipe

I did brew the clone recipe on 1/19/2020. I tried to duplicate the recipe as close I could or say I wanted to. The one thing I did not add was the vanilla. The original beer I didn't taste vanilla and I'm not a fan of it. The brew was intense and quite complicated but in the end well worth it. I...

    Thoughts on boil-off rate?

I have been following this post in hopes to lower my boil-off rates from 2.1 Gal/Hr. to a lower level which I'm doing by lowering my power output to the electric element. My boiling action went from very rigorous to a mild movement of the liquid. I have partially covered my kettle, to leaving it...

    Thoughts on boil-off rate?

When I first began BIAB brewing, I was asking for help on hitting my numbers and everyone posted to take Good Readings!!! I continue to do that and in my own program I developed. I actually have estimated levels for pre, post and levels into my fermenter so I have ideas when I don't hit my level...
