A former longtime reporter for the Oakland Tribune was critically injured when he was hit by a Muni train Sunday night in San Francisco's Financial District, authorities said.
Bill Brand was in critical condition at San Francisco General Hospital after he was hit about 9:10 p.m. Sunday, family members said.

After leaving the paper in July, he continued to write a regular beer column titled "What's on Tap" and contribute to the Bottoms Up blog.

Bill is always a big proponent of responsible alcohol consumption, and last night was no exception. He made ample use of the dump bucket on our table, and was the model of imbibing responsibility. He was clearheaded and lucid when he stepped back into the San Francisco rain after dinner.

Stable is medical jargon for "no change." He was in critical yet, stable condition. It was still very serious, obviously.
