I have searched the forums and can't find this question specifically answered. Here is my starter process:

Measure 1L of water, pour into pot
Measure 100g of DME, stir into water
Boil 10 minutes
Pour into flask
Cool in sink ice bath
Resulting starter size = 800mL

Is this a 1L starter or an 800mL starter? Is my OG 1.038 (100g in 1L) or 1.048 (100g in 800ml)?

Thanks for the help

Agreed, start with more water and boil down to 1L. I think you are right, I think you made a 1.047 gravity starter. It will be fine but is a little high.

Thanks for the thought. I only have a 1L flash at the moment so I will probably just do 800g in 1L of water.

It does seem odd that the conventional wisdom of 10:1 is a bit misleading when you account for boil off. Or am I misinterpreting the conventional wisdom?
