Whitelabs starter question

I needed an American lager and the only think the LHBS had was one package of Whitelabs Pure Pitch. Got home to make a starter and realized the born on date was Jan 10 2016, but still within the use by date. Plugged the numbers into brewers friend starter calculator and it stated the yeast was at 0 percent. Does anyone have a clue what the percentage of viability this new packaging Whitelabs is? This particular package is a little over 5 months old, but within the use by date.

I don't think packaging makes much difference wrt viability, it's environmental conditions that count.

fwiw, Mrmalty says 10% viability - enough to salvage...
