So, I have been asked to give a presentation on Beer in mythology and fantasy/sci-fi literature at a convention in Chattanooga, TN. I have a basic outline so far and I have samples of beers inspired by fantasy and sci-fi literature/movies. So far I am discussing/sampling stuff inspired by Dune, Romulan Ale from Star Trek, brews from George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" (aka Game of Thrones), three different brews from Lord of the Rings, mead from Norse mythology, and Dog Fish Head's Ta Henket as an example of what ancient Egyptians may have brewed (which could relate to Stargate also).

Can anybody come up with any other mythology or fantasy/science fiction works where beer would have played an important role? I need to fill 1.5 to two hours with this topic.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not big into the sci fi or fantasy movie culture so have limited knowledge on what your asking for but I do like the concept behind most movies in the genre. I love science and history so this thread intrigues me... looking forward to the discussion!

This sounds really cool! I wish I could attend.

I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for but someone made a really neat "Bender Brau" inspired by Futurama. http://imgur.com/a/ma6qT/ It is detailed (including the persons recipe).

Have you looked at any of the other Dogfish Head Ancient Ales? I did a beer dinner with 4 of them awhile back, and they were all good.

The ones we head:
Theobroma (Aztec)
Midas Touch (Mediterranean)
Chateau Jiahu (Ancient China)
Sah Tea (Scandinavian)

I finally tried all of them and they are such an awesome idea. Just think, as you drink Theobroma you are drinking the beer they have to sacrifices before their deaths. So interesting.

The only thing that comes to my mind was a reference to brewing in Karen Miller's "The Innocent Mage" where it discusses one of the main characters' enjoyment at attending the brewer's guild meetings and learning how they roast their hops. /rolleyes

I did not remember that at all from the book! I must re-read the stories. (off-topic but I was surprised how good those books were)

I brewed my whiskely stout for the holidays. then,when I started writing my book,a dystopian sci-fi about a hombrewer which now runs a 6bbl brewery for the well-healed members of The New World Order,I changed it. The kegs will have this label,shipped out right before they change things back to a better world in a like fashion;

I used the bottle label for inllustration purposes.

I was infatuated with blackbeard as a kid. Folks have a place in nags head. Isn't it Anne's not Ann's? Perhaps you spelled it like that on purpose.

Dresden files: Mac's Ales. Dark, light, brown. Microbrewy in chicago in the Dresdenverse.
Kingkiller Chronicles: Bredon Beer "made by bees, and Brewers in Bredon" "Bredon... is closer to bread... than beer"
LOTR:Ent-Draught

You're right. I miss-spelled it according to wiki. It's Anne's,not Ann's. Gotta change the label...

I think this has inspired me to make a 3 stigmata of Palmer Eldricht beer named "Brewzie". Now what to put in it...

Sci fi/fantasy author Modesitt always has his characters comparing the quality of local made beer in his books. Somehow they always prefer lagers.
