Is this normal? I started a cherry melomel yesterday, I'm using Knudsens Pure Cherry Juice so there's virtually no haze or residue from the cherries. I pitched a packet of D47, but even in the starter I could tell there was not a lot going on. I figured I might have bought packets that were defective, but I rehydrated and pitched a second packet of D47 this morning after getting no activity. Finally, 12 hours later I heard a bubble and went to look, but I've never seen this kind of residue on top. It is not an active fermentation whatsoever, so I don't see this as being a product of that. Being just cherry juice and honey, I'm wondering if leaving it at room temperature for over a day and a half might have started growing something else? Hopefully not

What was your starting gravity?
12hrs isn't that long of a delay. I've had meads take almost three days to get going before.
