I received a couple kits that included vanilla beans to be added to the secondary. Im my case the conical. The beans in the kit ane dry to the point of being brittle. Might even be a bit of mold on the ends. I cut them up (too dry to split) and added to some rum for a soak.

Has anyone experienced the same issue? Are the useable after the soak?
 
I soak mine in vodka before adding to secondary to kill any bugs or bacteria and also to pull more flavor out of the beans
 
i suppose a bit more time in the fermenter would not be so bad. I was ready to add the vanilla before a trip but it would be wise to get new ones.
