I brewed what I am calling a Northern English Brown Ale that has a subtle but unmistakable flavor and aroma of pipe tobacco. I didn't intend to get this character in the beer, but it's there, and I like it.

Every once in a while I see a thread about adding tobacco to a brew, which is a really bad idea, so I thought I would share my recipe for others to try who want tobacco character in their beer.

OG = 1.050, FG = 1.012, IBU = 27, SRM = 15.

Muntons Maris Otter, 80%
Crisp brown malt 65L, 8%
Briess crystal 40L, 8%
Simpsons coffee malt 150L, 4%

Mash at 152 for 45 minutes, mash-out at 168 for 15 minutes.

90 minute boil. Add Pilgrim (9.1% AA), 0.78 ounces for 60 minutes

Ferment with Wyeast 1728 Scottish Ale at 60-62 degrees for 3 weeks, then keg.

It's a nice, simple recipe. I would not add any late hops, which I think would obscure the tobacco flavor and aroma.

Cheers!

This is great. Thanks!

I wonder if the Coffee Malt and brown malt together is what creates the flavor. I love pipe tobacco and am tempted to brew this in the fall.

I am glad it didn't really have any tobacco in it. I like the smell of tobacco.. As long as it is not burning!!!! Tried a chunk of chewing tobacco once, - I almost threw up!.

Even though it sounds nice I think I will skip this one.

I get it frequently too from similar grainbills (DEM/brown porters). A lot of times it ages out very quickly, or at least gets overshadowed. I think the key is mid-range roasted malt (pale chocolate for me) and not enough % so it hits harsh/acrid.
