I scored a scrapped hotplate on ebay with an intact stirrer. It turned out the heating worked fine as well after I had realigned the front panel. It didn't even need hitting with a hammer :ban:

Very nice find!

I've had some fun with the food coloring, too. I like starting the sitrplate first and then adding the coloring. Those few seconds when it's clear liquid with a colored vortex in the middle is pretty fun, haha.
 
Yeah, I didn't get any good pics but the effect is cool!

One thing that slightly surprised me about this is that the stirrer maxes out around 1200 rpm. Unmodified PC fans go about 3000 rpm, and the usual speed hacks only take it down to around 2000 rpm before stalling as measured by my DIY tachometer. I think you don't need to go as fast because the magnetic armature underneath is good and long so that you can use long stirbars.
