I’m looking to motorize my Barley Crusher. I’ve got a 12” steel pulley, plus a weld-on hub, that I plan to put on the mill.

It’ll be run by a 1/2HP, 1750RPM motor. The pulley weighs about 8lbs. Is that to heavy for the BCs 3/8” shaft? I’m thinking wear and tear on the bearings but is it an issue if I’m running the mill for about 3 minutes every other week?

Looking for info from some guys who have a similar setup…

Thanks,

Biz

how much does an electric drill pull? I have been using BarleyCrusher with an electric drill weekly for over 2 years, it is worn but given the frequency of use it is doing well.

Check out what Seabee John did with his. His pulley fits on the shaft, a little different than your link. It puts all the strain on the table using the shaft bearings instead of on the BC shaft. I'm building the same thing with these:

$11 each, small price to pay to keep the shaft unstressed.

That's a great idea. Never thought of supporting the shaft near the mill. I don't have access to the exact same parts, but a recessed bearing in a 3/4" plywood piece would probably do the job. Thanks for the tip!
