for steeping grains so my friend and I used a colander and some coffer filters. I thought I'd share so here's a picture of us draining it.

I've actually had to skip brewing when I was doing extract because I forgot a grain bag. Nice improvisation!
 
I've actually never used a grain bag in about 20 years of brewing. Colander, and I have a funnel with a reuse able filter that fits in the funnel.
 
Looks like it worked well. Nicely done! I try to keep a few grain bags on hand just in case and I keep a reusable one for these events as well. I do all grain but depending upon adjuncts I use, I need grain bags.
 
1 gallon paint strainers also work well in a pinch, as well as only being 50-80 cents a piece. just send them through a washer with no soap or soak in some PBW for a couple hours and rinse well. tie them off with floss or fishing line.
