***********1. Enforce rules only against their foes (i.e., anyone who does not suck up to them) while exempting their friends from similar or worse behavior.

2. Silently boot someone and then proceed to trash talk the person as if the person was still there with an opportunity to respond.

3. Boot someone and then start a thread for the sole purpose of boasting about having removed the person, so as to bask in the praise of sychophantic members applauding the moderator's bold action.

4. If a person is being stalked or trolled, scold, warn and threaten both the victim and the perpetrator to stop it. If the victim protests, boot the victim for having defied the moderator's authority. Add injury to insult by allowing the troll or stalker to stay because the stalker or troll didn't talk back to the moderator.

5. If the moderator loses an argument to another member, selectively delete the member's comments so that the thread no longer makes any sense.

6. Selectively enforce the tribe's rules only against newcomers, newbies or people who are not friend with the moderator.

7. Speak about their actions as moderator in the passive voice, use the royal we, and otherwise take on a haughty, authoritarian tone. I mean, dude, you're just a moderator. ***************

A. No bags, I let them swim free!

B. I have not detected any change from a turkey fryer to electric with a 4400w LD element. I do not brew a lot of light beers. The lightest is a Kolcsh that is mainly pils malt.

C. PID in manual mode. Once a boil is acheived I set it down to a pre-determined rate to achieve a specific boil off.

A) My nylon paint strainer bag sits right on the element every boil. Those things never die. No, the bag never gets tangled on anything.

B) Never did stovetop. No noticeable change from propane to electric.

I don't believe there is any need to increase the surface area of a ULWD element.

I wouldn't install vertically. Makes it impossible to brew smaller batches. Better to put a drain there instead, if you can get one flush with bottom. Install element as low as possible on the side.

Can't use temperature to control boil. In fact, there is really no feedback (i.e., temp) useful in setting the boil power. The first time you use your system, just play with the duty cycle so that you can maintain a healthy boil. My system (keggle, 5500W element) keeps it rolling at 70%. (Actually, I haven't tried lower). I do leave it at 100% until the temp gets near boiling, then set to 70%. Very easy.

all great replies.

A good hopping approach. Eliminates the lost hop flavor by trapping them in a bag. What do you use to prevent the hops from clogging the works up, a large surface area screen strainer?

I've considered building one and using some SST screening from McMaster Carr or Grainger.

I have a false bottom in my converted keg. Most of the time my hops are a combination of whole and pellets so the whole hops with the false bottom help to strain.

I wedge it under my pickup tube so the pickup tube goes through the center of the scrubbie. There's about 1/4" between my keg bottom and the pickup tube.
