I set up an Auberins controller to a smaller top mount refrigerator for my fermentation fridge. The controller can turn the fridge on and off and also a 100-300 watt heart source. I bought a 100 watt ceramic heat bulb used in reptile cages to do this, but after a quick test it seems that this takes a long time to heat up and cool down. I’m thinking this will cause an erratic temperature cycle. Will this work or should I just use a standard reflector bulb? Thoughts please.

Granted not as cheap as a lamp but no worries about an element burning out wasting a brew is one of these;http://compare.ebay.com/like/290516886057?ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar&itemid=290516886057
Shop around they come up way cheaper plus in SS as well higher wattages.
We installed them in electrical switch gear to ward off moisture so I ended up with a couple for my brewing that work great. A stat 0-100*F with a built in muffin fan.
I have these exact 100 watt units with plenty of heat no UV light for a fridge in my mild climate a minimum of 31*F the all time low.
There are heater strips also used in control panels they are metal 3/8" x 1
1/2" x app 8" long from 50 to 300 plus watts 120 VAC with 240 VAC ive seen.

Thet get rather hot but not enough to burn paper, I would add a small muffin fan to draw off the heat plus circulate.

What about a fermwrap? Low density heat in direct contact with your carboy...I've had great luck with mine. You can make one for about ten bucks.
