I want to check my gravity so I can time a diacetyl rest correctly. I am using one gallon carboys. Is it OK to gently pour some beer out of it into my sanitized hydrometer tube? I was going to buy a wine thief but pouring is free. :pipe:

I usually do this for sampling from 1 gallon carboys. No problems thus far and likely less of a contamination issue than taking several samples with a thief!

I use the outer sleeve of my autosiphon like a turkey Baster the hydrometer fits right in the tip without the cap on and drains the tube down the hydrometer into my test tube

I'd use a turkey baster. I don't know about pouring the beer itself.

SANITIZED auto siphon or turkey baster. A thief will likely be too big to fit into the mouth of a 1 gallon glass carboy.
