I am about to start this dry stout recipe and would like to hear suggestions on when to add the hops? Also, how long to steep the grains, flaked barley?
Ordinarily I would heat the water with the grains in grain bags until it was approx 170deg. Would this suffice?

I'd do the recipe as written, not adding more grain. You'll get plenty of flavor and color from them.

As far as the hops, I'd add them as directed in the recipe, too. I don't see any reason to change it.

thanks, she's already boiling. This is my SWMBO's first brew! Hoping to get her hooked, that way I can buy more equipment!
I did up the grains very slightly to 10oz each (.625lbs) and added 1oz of target and 1/2 oz of goldings at boil. Will add 1/2 of goldings at 5 min remaining. I played with beersmith a little and changed the Alpha acid of my hops to what was stated on the bag. I also only added the 4lbs of liquid extract to begin with and will add the 2lbs of DME at 15 min remaining....Is this a good Idea?
