I started a thread here: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f36/just-freaking-pissed-stupid-pump-467447/ describing the problem I was having with my chugger pump. well, thanx to a bunch of experimenting and help from bobby at brewhardware.com (BUY FROM HIM) I have found out that my pump is working fine. when I filled up my kettle with cold soapy water and used the pump with my setup (out from kettle, through the pump, through my counterflow chiller, back to kettle) the output was so weak that it would not even whirlpool. you could barely see the water move at all. so I next tried the simplest of setups - out from kettle, through pump, back to kettle - pump works fine. this was my problem:

with it in line my output drops to near zero. however I know from my last brew session that it is doing a perfectly fine job of cooling, just no whirlpool. is anyone else experiencing this? I can just leave my setup the way it is as I can whirlpool with just the pump and then stop, replumb my hoses to include the chiller and then chill but that is not the most elegant of solutions. anyways just wanted to put it out there that the chugger was NOT the problem and I apologize for slagging it
