I am planning to buy this:

http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/for/1831441912.html

It is a Perlick Backbar refrigeration unit. The ad claims to only need a condenser unit. I am leery of purchasing as I have no idea if I can get it running. What do you guy think?

He has contacted me a couple time so I think I can get it cheap. Plus I would not pay much for a broken unit.

Thanks,
Scott

I think condenser units for refrigeration systems are sometime more expensive than what the unit is worth. I would call a refrigerator repair center and get a quote.

I would be extremely wary of that deal. The photo is not even one of the actual unit. Why is that? He claims the unit is new, but it needs a condenser. Why is that? If it's actually brand new it should need nothing at all. More than likely it will need more than just a condenser. Possibly a compressor too. If the condenser is missing and the system was left open, there could be major problems. Major and very expensive problems. The guy would be stupid not to have it repaired for a few hundred dollars if the potential return could be several thousand based on his claim that they sell for 4-6 k new. Why doesn't he fix it himself and sell it in working condition. There must be a reason and I think I know what it is.

Look to be ripped off mostly. Seriously, assume the worst and go with that. Might be worth a couple hundred just for the cabinet, but don't count on ever getting it to operate. That would be a long shot and probably a very long shot. I'm not an HVAC guy, so someone else will have to help you out on this. My gut instincts say run away from the deal and don't look back.

Sounds like a gamble, contact a refridgeration specialist to inquire on the repair costs.

I think it may be difficult to get a reefer guy to look at it and provide a repair estimate for free. They'd probably want about $100 up front to do so and I don't blame them at all for that. I think the seller is hip to this and taking advantage of it. More than likely, he already knows what it will cost to repair the unit and that's why he's unloading it.
