Quick question for everyone...brewing with an extract kit from Northern Brewer. This was also a full boil. Anyway, the recipe called for steeping the grains for 15 minutes and then bringing to a boil before removing from the heat and adding the extract and bringing to boil again.

What happens if you don't get to a full boil the first time? Got to about 170 without boiling and realized later I was supposed to reach boiling. Just curious what effect that might have on the finished product?

Thanks...assuming it wouldn't make a big difference when you boil again right after that.

Is there a definitive reason for for the first boil?

So that it comes to a boil faster. You bring it to a boil, remove it from heat and add the extract. If you add the extract on the heat, it might scorch. But if you have it to boiling, and then add the extract, and set it back on the heat right away, you'll be boiling in no time.
