I have made starters for beer quite often but I have never done it for mead or wine. Can you do it for mead? If so would you use DME or honey, or dextrose? Need a little help here. Thanks.

I've never used starters for mead, I just add a good dose of nutrients and aerate the hell out of it. Mead has delicate flavors, so I wouldn't use anything that would detract, such as malt extract (unless you are looking for that effect).

I use starters for 5 gallons or larger in which I am not using dried yeast.

In a 2 liter flask:
Stir bar, preferably cross shaped
6 oz of honey
1 tsp GoFerm
Water up to 1.5 liters
Pitch yeast and place on stirrer for 1-3 days.

Or you can just do as is routine for most of us and just rehydrate the yeast as per the pack instructions - with the appropriate amount of GoFerm if you have some......

Is that 6 oz by volume or by weight? I just received my 1388 activator on Saturday....after I had pitched the WLP570, of course :p
