I'm currently in the process of mashing a witbier and plan to brew again this weekend an american lager.

My grain bill is about 50/50 wheat/pils malts. OG will be 1.051. Am I ok taking some of the wort from the boil kettle and putting it in the starter and pitching the lager yeast in it to get that starter going? Or am I just better off making a DME starter again?

You can use wort from the boil kettle. You might want to dilute it down to around 1.040.
