Did you try your regulator? I'm looking at alternatives for secondary regulators as well and I don't see why you couldn't use it for that. I'm about to order a standard air compressor regulator for my setup to see how it goes.

i have a cheap digital pressure gauge like that from harbor freight. i use it on my portable CO2 tank because the main regulator gauges arent very good. i did have to modify one of the connections because it used a swivel fitting which is not positively air-tight. that doesnt matter so much for compressed air, but you dont want any CO2 to leak.

as long as you have a primary regulator to drop the pressure from tank pressure (600-1000psi) down to something managable (and within the secondary regulators operating range), like 50-100psi, any old air regulator should work.
