Position Description
Reporting to the Plant Manager, in San Diego, is responsible for all activities associated with the fermentation, recovery, blending and packaging of bio-gums in San Diego, Is responsible for the equipment and personnel required to produce products safely, efficiently and on schedule, as well as directing the Culture Development and Process Control Laboratories and the process efficiencies for San Diego. Operates within an overall departmental budget of $14 16 million of which 6 million is for payroll and benefits. Directs a staff of 7 supervisors, 4 Process Engineers and approximately 80 hourly employees. May act for the Plant Manager in the Plant Managers absence.
Position Requirements
Reports to the Plant Manager working with an established budget and general guidance. Works directly with other departments including Plant Engineering, Maintenance, Research, QC, Finance and personnel to achieve production requirements.
With a staff of professional and supervisory personnel, directs all phases of manufacturing including preparation of operating procedures and instructions, production scheduling, preparation of production plans and cost reduction objectives, maintenance of equipment and necessary record keeping.
In addition to being responsible for directing the operation of equipment associated with fermentation and processing on a three-shift, seven-day basis, the incumbent is also responsible for operation of the large volume solvent recovery system consisting of multiple stills and associated heat recovery equipment, the plant process air generating equipment, and the chill water and cooling tower systems. Efficient operation of these units has a significant impact on product cost and plant productivity.
Works with Plant Engineering to schedule maintenance so that repairs and preventative maintenance work is completed safely and promptly without interference with the production schedules in order to keep equipment and facilities in good working order. Establishes and maintains standards to ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices.
Is directly responsible for the solution of operating problems and process disruptions. Authorizes necessary processing adjustments to meet the various finished product specifications and maintain plant productivity. Establishes priorities and directs staff towards accomplishing departmental cost reduction objectives.
Initiates in-plant studies for process improvement and cost reduction through direction of process engineers and laboratory staff. Within the limitations of the staff and pilot equipment, maintains internal fermentation monitoring programs and evaluates incoming raw materials, new raw materials and reagents. Assures optimum production processes by seeking new and improved refinements to existing processes and evaluates new changes being introduced from Research and Development programs.
Since Research & Development work takes place in San Diego, initial trial runs and plant scale development work for process improvement and new products usually takes place in this plant. The incumbent and staff therefore play a key role in such activities. This requires innovative management to adapt equipment, scheduling and operating procedures to accommodate experimental work without unduly impacting line production.
Administers Company and personnel policies and is responsible for the development of all subordinates. Establishes necessary training programs and initiates all personnel actions including salary actions, promotions, disciplinary actions, etc. Administers applicable union contracts and maintains good relationship between management and union. Hears grievances at Step 3 of the grievance procedure. Is responsible for safety and welfare of all employees
in the plant.
Works with the Quality Control Manager in preparing responses to requests from regulatory agencies and customers. Assists in revising and establishing
Requires special knowledge in the field of fermentation as well as broad background in engineering (preferably Chemical Engineering) and managerial ability. Must be able to maintain effective communications with all levels of management.
Is responsible for protecting all proprietary information and property against loss of any kind. This includes, but is not limited to, confidential reports and memos, process and product knowledge, equipment and research methodology.
Works with SPB staff to troubleshoot operating units, recommend best technology for improved operations.
Coordinate shutdowns for the area.
Initiate in-plant studies for process improvements.
Interface with R&D on new technologies
Special assignments as needed on cost studies, recruiting potential employees, and directing interdepartmental activities.
As a member of Plant Managers staff, the incumbents responsibilities may include additional assignments such as special cost studies, participation in formulating Production Department policies, recruiting and interviewing potential employees, and directing activities of interdepartmental committees.
