But this last batch tastes too smoky..... I didn't like it in the cans when I bought it last fall either.

Is this smoky flavor malt or what? Maybe I just got a bad batch. I know tastes change but something here has really turned on me.
 
Last fat tire I had was maybe 2 months back in CO and it was lovely, so perhaps you did get a bad one. But, tastes do change. I have a fat tire recipe that I put together from multiple sources that fairly well approximates the fat tire of my college days. That's the one I prefer :)

if you wouldn't mind posting your favorite I'd like to try to recreate or follow it....I'm only doing extracts though right now...but I have a friend w/ a mash setup etc.
 
No sweat, see recipe below. It is an extract based recipe. I gathered bits and pieces from around, so I don't have proper attribution (totally me bad). Note that the specialty grains for this one require a mini-mash or long steep because of the Munich.
