Which works best when getting original gravity and final gravity? And if refractometer is best which model works well for home brewing?

In my experience a hydrometer is best for the FG, as alcohol changes the refraction of beer and you need to guestimate/calculate the FG if you use a refractometer. In cooled wort, I prefer a hydrometer as well.

A refractometer is great to check the SG of your runnings, to make sure you're not oversparging as well as a quick check of the preboil gravity to make sure you've hit your efficiency.

I use both, but for totally different things. If you just want to check OG and FG, a hydrometer is probably best.
