Hydro reading issue

Hey all, question on getting a hydro reading. I am just doing a 1 gallon batch to try to dial everything. However, the hydro is taller than the gallon jug is, any advice on trying to get a FG? This cider started at 1.060 and after 10 hours I have a layer of crud on the bottom and a layer on the top.

have a wine thief and a turkey baster? use the baster to fill up the thief

luckily we had our block party today and one of my neighbors has a hydrometer test tube and I will be able to get a turkey baster tomorrow to do the test. Thank carburde78.
