How to calculate optimal sparge volume...

This is related to my other thread... sorry!

I can put my total volume of water in my lauter tun, so do I need to sparge? For example, I can put 9 gallons in to get 5.5 gallons out.

Would it be better to put in 8, get 4.5 out and sparge with 1 gallon to reach volume?

p.s. my lauter tun has a spinning sparge nozzle in the lid so I can do continuous if I wanted...

I guess I always wondered why I would absolutely need to sparge. I think I'm going to skip it next time...

It's all a matter of efficiency. If you don't mind paying a few dollars more per batch, go for it.
