Brewed BrewersBest Hopnog 2012 7 days ago, OG was spot on (1.060). Transferred to secondary this morning, FG sitting nicely (1.014). Extract recipe has IBU's at 48-52 for 2.5 gal boil.. Quick taste revealed serious hops, seemingly stronger than what I would associate with IBU's at this level. No biggee as I'm a huge fan of hoppy beers. I've been plugging in extract kit info of beers I make to my iBrewmaster APP in an effort to understand what makes beers tick. In this case I'm trying to understand where the seemingly increase in hoppiness (if there is such a desc). Plugging in all relevant data into iBrewmaster, at a 2.5 gal boil gets me to 48.5 IBU's as the recipe highlights, however I recently began doing full boils, when I adjust app to 5-6 gal boil IBU calculation jumps into the 80's. Am I correct in my conclusion that doing a full boil increases hop utilization hence the increase in IBU's or as I described a greater hoppiness flavor? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. PS: full boils have really improved the beers I make. Cheers!! :mug:
