Did a Imperial Stout last night (1.100). Pitched two packs of Notty dry and stuck it in a fermentation chamber at 64 F. The airlock was bubbling vigorously at 12 hours, and when I rechecked at 18 hours it had blown the airlock.

Is this normal? I immediately fashioned a kind of blow-off tube setup and I am hoping that it holds. Think I am out of the woods for the moment, but it really surprised me. On the other hand, this is the first really big beer I've done.

No worries. I am enjoying a homebrew at the moment.

I've had huge beers, as well as low ABV beers that blow out of the fermenter. It's hit or miss. I'd suggest you start using a blow off on all your beers. Cheap insurance.....
