ok so this is my first post.

I am brewing a batch tonite and i need a recipe. I would like this to be a lighter beer that will be a real crowd pleaser.

This is what i have to work with

6 lbs light malt extract
1 lb crystal malt 15l
1 oz magnum hops pellets
1 oz cascade hops pellets

any ideas?

Welcome!

This seems like an easy list of ingredients that will make a good recipe.

Steep the crystal in 2.5 gallons at 155 degrees for 20 minutes.
Add the extract and mix it up very well.
Bring to a boil for 60 minutes.
Add the Magnum at the start of the boil.
Add the Cascade at 5 minutes left in the boil
Cool, top off to 5 gallons, and pitch yeast.

You could even separate the extract in half, and add half at the beginning of the boil, and half toward the end.

I would follow the above recipe with two caveats: the magnum will provide quite a bit of bitterness as an early addition hop. Also, you may want to add .5 ounces of cascade at the end then dry hop with the other half, I would probably add more like 2 ounces of cascades at dry hop.

i like extremely hoppy beers but alot of my friends desire a much milder taste. Will an ounce of magnum for a 5 gallon batch be to bitter?

beersmith says it will be fine, I thought the magnum would provide a bit too much bitterness but I think the crystal will balance out nicely.

Hm. I get different IBU values in beersmith than you are getting. For 1 oz Magnum, 60 minutes, 14% I get 51.8 IBU's. For the cascade, 1 oz, 10 minutes, 5.5A% I get 7.4 for t a total of 59.2 which would be very high for his BMC friends (and for an American Pale Ale).

Reducing this to .5 oz each brings us to 29.6, much more in line.

If it were me, I would follow a schedule more like what is used for the HBT famous Centennial Blond recipe, something like
.25 oz Magnum @ 55
.25 oz Magnum @ 30
.25 oz Cascade @ 10
.25 oz Cascade @ 5

This would give you 25.5 IBU's and still have some hop aroma due to the late additions of the Cascade. While the OP as a hop-head might not be crazy about it, it will be more appealing to the others.
