Brewed a wet hop IPA today.
Everything went perfect. Hit all temps and volumes.
Forgot to check my gravity.
Pitched 1.2 liter 1.038 starter.
Realized my mistake and checked the gravity 5 minutes or so later.
1.056.
Target was 1.067.
I don't believe the reading to be an accurate representation of the wort.
I think the 1.2 liters I pitched diluted the gravity sample.
Any insight???

I don't think a 1.2 liter starter would drop your gravity .011 points. Thinking more like a gallon for a drop like that.

1.2 liters in 5 gallons? It would not make that big a difference.

Extract with top up water? If so uneven mix. If it is, you used all the ingredients and got the right volume your OG wilt be 1.067 give or take .002

Did you get the right volume.

Sample at the calibration temperature of your hydrometer.

All grain? Good crush, most gravity problems with all grain can be traced to a bad crush.

Any of this help?

I can't figure my efficiency issue on this one.
You're probably right, just thought this one went perfectly. pH, chemistry, temp, volume, everything was dead on, except I forgot to get SG before pitching.
I kind of don't believe it, but it read what it read.

My LHBS is notorious for a bad crush.
I always run it through my corona style mill again, and did this time.
Need to invest in a quality mill.
As long as it's delicious I'm happy.
3 6 packs are promised away already.

Why don't you just mill on your own? I have been using a Corona style mill for almost 5 years now. I get pretty consistent 70% efficiency.

If fermentation hasn't started you could take another reading.

Oops.
I upped my volumes to allow for wet hop water absorption.
Did hit my volumes, but with 3/4 gallon extra water.
I'll try to remember next year
