You should use DME so that the yeast are used to eating the malt sugar. If you use corn sugar they grow a taste for the simple sugars and don't like to eat the maltose (i think that's the sugar) that makes up most of the sugar in the wort.
 
If you want to cheap out, just mash a little 2 row instead of using DME. Way cheaper, and some say the yeast will respond better.

Hmmm. I may try this. It would be cheaper and it would give me a small taste of all grain before I went full scale.
