Was having a conversation with my son about nose damage and/or loss and Tycho Brahe logically came to mind but I couldn't remember the details surrounding his disfigurement.
According to Wikipedia he and his third cousin had a heated dispute over the "legitimacy of a mathematical formula" that ended up in a duel and the loss of Tycho's nose. He wore a metal nose thereafter, possibly several different prostheses depending on the occasion.
Further reading revealed that Tycho had a tame elk. When Wilhelm of Hesse-Kassel inquired about acquiring the animal, Tycho replied with the sad news that the elk had just died on a visit to entertain a nobleman at Landskrona. Apparently during dinner the elk had drunk a lot of beer, fallen down the stairs, and died.
