After using my hydrometer for the first time as I was putting beer into primary fermenter, I rinsed it off and set it to dry. After about an hour I went to clean up and noticed it was foggy. After careful examination I noticed a hairline crack. Would that be enough to ruin my batch of beer?

Probably not.
Don't you have a tube for testing beer in http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000NDHGEM/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20
I would not recommend putting ANYTHING into a full batch of beer. If the hydrometer is cracked, finish it off in a trash can and get another. I could have a small graveyard of broken hydrometers if I would have made a headstone for everyone I broke.

I agree with this, always take a sample with a sanitized wine thief or turkey baster and never return that sample to your fermenter. When you buy the new hydrometer, get 2. Since I bought 2 at once I haven't broken one.:ban:
