I need to run this by you guys. Sorry if it is obvious but I can't figure out how I came pretty close to desired OG considering what my numbers are telling me.
Recipe:
6.6 lb light LME
2.5 lb pale malt
1.5 lb Munich malt
1 lb crystal 40
.75 lb chocolate malt
.50 lb black patent malt

1.75 oz east Kent Golding 60 min
.75 oz fuggles 15 min
.75 oz east Kent Golding 0 min

Did a partial mash in a 10g rubbermaid cooler with false bottom.
pre-heated mash tun
had to add prolly 2 qt to get temp up
2qt/lb recipe said to shoot for 153 i was closer to 150 60 min mash
Sparged with 1.2 qt/lb at 180

First runnings were 1.043 3.25 gallons collected
Did one round of sparging
Total collected was 5.5 gallons at 1.024

So if I do the numbers from Palmers book
24pts X 5.5 gallons / 6.25 lb of grain that =22ish. Which he says is bad.

BUT at the end of my hour boil and cooled my gravity was 1.055? Recipe said 1.064 but it was still within style guidelines for a robust porter.

Please advise. Hope I provided all info needed. Thanks in advance.

How much did you boil off!!

That seems like quite a stretch to go from 1.024 pre-boil at 5.5 gallons to 1.055 post boil.

Are you sure your volume measurements are correct?

I topped off with water to 7 gallons.
Then boiled off 1 gallon over the hour.

You got most of your fermentables from the LME. That's how you hit the OG you did.

I'm still having my coffee this morning, so I'm not sure about the numbers. 5.5 gallons doesn't seem right if you mashed with 2 quarts per pound (13 quarts or 3.25 gallons) and sparged with 1.2 quarts per pound, though. There must have been some liquid absorption in the grain. Maybe someone who is more awake than me can offer more advice about these numbers.

There are ways to improve efficiency, so don't worry too much about it. The first time is always a learning experience. You will still get great flavor and some fermentables from your PM.

The runnings didn't include the LME, did they?
You added that to the main boil, then re-measured, right?

The OG had to be pre LME.

Wouldn't it be easier to just do your partial mash in a bag? You may want to check out BIAB methods. There are some really good threads on here.

Bull

I added probably 2 liters of boiling water
to mash to try and get temp to 153.
Lme wasn't in first running calculations.
I added that the last 15 minutes.
But obviously it was in the OG
of 1055 chilled.

I hear you guys about getting most
of fermentables from lme. But if my
effeciency was in range it should have
been (70) based on recipe wouldn't
I have over shot the style OG?

Never thought about brew in a bag.
My keg should be ready in a few weeks
so I can go AG. Thought this pm
would be a good baby step in that
direction. Thanks for continued input.
This forum is awesome.

Not to be a pain but are my numbers just wacked? Or could this have happened? Thanks.
