Carboy or ale pail?

It's better to use WHAT YOU PREFER, it really doesn't matter to the cider/mead/beer, what it is fermented in. The yeast don't really care.

In this hobby there are few if any "BETTERS," it really is simply a matter of preferences. You can ask 10 different homebrewers the same questions and get 12 different answers, and they'll ALL be right.
 
I prefer to use a carboy, mainly because I like to see what is going on in there. If you are brewing in an area with lots of light, (I.E. not a closet or basement) you can always put an old t-shirt over the carboy to block light.
