So I know this question has been asked before, but there didn't seem to be a clear answer and I figure enough time has passed to ask it again...

So... does carapils need to be mashed in order to achieve its benefits (head retention) or can it simply be steeped? I have seen instructions saying to just steep, and other instructions saying it must be mashed.

Would be a nice steeping grain to add with some crystal malt in a simple steep for any extract beer. Cheers!

CaraPils can be treated as a crystal malt and steeped. CaraFoam from Weyermann, another dextrin malt, does have both starch & enzyme content. It will work best if mashed but can be steeped with some effect. It could be either as both malts are sometimes generically called carapils.
