Can you make a starter with Dextrose?

I want to get a starter going from some yeast I am going to harvest from a bottle, I was wondering if I could start out by using dextrose instead of DME for the starter for the first couple steps? Pro's Con's?

I've done it many times. It worked fine for me. The yeast books say it is a bad idea because you will might end up with yeast that doesn't do a good job fermenting maltose, but in my experience that didn't happen.
