SAN JOSE, Costa Rica - An American senior citizen killed an alleged mugger with his bare hands, and his traveling companions aboard a tour bus fended off two other assailants in the Atlantic coast city of Limon, police said.

The American, who is about 70 years old and retired from the military, put the 20-year-old in a head lock and broke his clavicle after the suspect and two other men armed with a knife and gun held up their tour bus, said Luis Hernandez, the police chief of Limon, 80 miles east of San Jose. The suspect, Warner Segura, was later declared dead, apparently from asphyxiation.

The two other men fled when the 12 senior citizens started defending themselves during the Wednesday attack. Afterward, the tourists drove Segura to the Red Cross where he was declared dead. The Red Cross also treated one of the tourists for an anxiety attack, Hernandez said Thursday.

The tourists left on their Carnival cruise ship after the incident and Hernandez said authorities do not plan to press charges against them.
“They were in their right to defend themselves after being held up,” he said.
Hernandez said Segura had previous charges against him for assaults.

Effort to disarm perpetrator
In a media statement, Miami, Fla.-based Carnival Cruise Lines said the attack occurred during an outing at a Limon beach which a group of a dozen passengers had arranged on their own.
“According to witnesses, while sightseeing at a local beach, the group of guests were approached by three assailants, one of whom was armed,” the statement said.
“The victims struggled with the armed perpetrator, and were able to disarm him. During this process, the gunman’s two accomplices fled the scene. In the course of disarming and restraining the assailant, he died from apparent asphyxiation.”

Yeah.. I saw that. It's an awesome story. I'm happy to think that had it happened in America, the end result would have been the same. But I am sad when I realize that it would've taken many months of investigation before reaching that point.

Swift justice baby.

I had an uncle who got in his last fistfight at the age of 72. And he won. Military vet, was in a bar, some young punk said something like, "Get outta my way, gramps..." Apparently the dude was on the floor in two seconds flat. That uncle was Special Forces in WWII. The Germans had foxholes with two people in them, and usually these people were friends. The Germans felt that this would encourage the soldiers to fight bravely for their comrades. So his job was to parachute behind enemy lines a day or two before the invasion and use piano wire to silently slit the throats of a SINGLE person in as many foxholes as possible while they slept... leaving one person remaining to be terrified cowering mess in the morning.

Man.. you just don't mess with people like that....

I read that story this morning and thought "kickass". :rockin: Don't dick with the boys from WW2. Uber respect for the Greatest Generation. :mug:

Actually, he's a little young for WWII. He would have been 8 in 1945. He might have seen the tail end of Korea, though. Or been an advisor in 'Nam. :D
