BrewPiLess trouble - timeouts, error, can't connect to server, controller not updating data

I have a newish install of BrewPiLess. It's been on/off having trouble. I initially thought it was a WiFi problem, but am not sure now.
I intitially set a static IP address in the BrewPiLess GUI and also had a static set in my Firewall DHCP server. I removed the Static from BPL and it's only at the DCHP server now. I can get a continuous ping from Windows PC to BPL ESP32. No trouble at all, even when the GUI is not updating and I'm seeing the trouble below.

The GUI is giving me messages:

• Failed to connect to server.
• Controller not updating data.
• waiting for update from script ...

No temps are showing up in the GUI. The serial monitor (http://192.168.2.250/testcmd.htm) seems to be putting out valid data only intermittently. (at the time of this capture, it was 11:08). The web pages become unresponsive or can't save changes. All the while my constant ping to the ESP32 is successful. Trying a different browser has the same results.

When this trouble is happening, the only thing in the GUI that seems to work is being able to change the password.

Not sure how to troubleshoot/fix this. Can someone help?

I think I found the cause of the problem, but don't understand how/why.
I noticed my temp sensors weren't showing any values in the GUI. I futzed with the wiring for them and everything started working.
