Has anybody every tried simply washing bottles in a dishwasher? Does this work and can it replace sanitizing them all by hand?

Yes. Wash them out beforehand, so you just need to sanitize. Then run the bottles through the dishwasher upside down WITHOUT any detergent, and make sure that it is on the heat dry cycle (the steam let off during the heat drying cycle is what sanitizes the bottles).

washing in a dishwasher: no because water doesn't really get inside that narrow mouth on the bottle

sanitizing using high heat wash and heat dry: yes this works, just make sure your d/w is clean on the inside...you don't want any little food particles spraying around.
